Case Study 1

Aluminum Tooling Plate Machining

One of our largest customers is a manufacturer of food processing and packaging machinery systems for international blue-chip organizations. We regularly manufacture both newly built machine components and spare parts for them.

On 12th December, Richconn received an urgent request for a nozzle clamp to be manufactured in an aluminum tooling plate. The part also required a hard anodize finish. The deadline for this order was less than eight standard working days. The aluminum machined nozzle clamp had to be packed in a suitcase for a flight out of the CN on 26th December.

We used our extensive aluminum tooling plate machining experience and knowledge of hard anodize plating allowances to quote on the items. Two days later on 14th December, we received the go-ahead, giving us only 4 working days to machine the item, allowing two days for the hard anodized finishing.

Due to the tight deadline, we had to make emergency adjustments to our production schedule. The parts were allocated to one of our highly skilled machinists who utilized their extensive experience to complete the part early, giving the plating company a vital extra half day to complete their process. The components made it into their suitcase and onto the flight.

Packaging Machinery Spare Part

Following an operational breakdown, we received a request from a pharmaceutical health care product manufacturer to help with their urgent requirement for a packaging machinery spare part.

The components were damaged beyond use and Marchesini, the Italian machine manufacturer, we’re offering a lead time of over six weeks for the replacement parts.

With only digital photographs to base our quotation on, we estimated a seven-day turnaround from receipt of the sample part and were given the go-ahead by the customer.

After lengthy discussions on how the component functioned and what the critical features were, we used our extensive reverse engineering and aluminum machining skills to manufacture two duplicate aluminum anodized components in just seven days and at a significantly lower cost than the Italian OEM.

Stainless Steel R&D Prototype

A CN domestic appliance company contacted us for urgent stainless steel R&D pre-production prototype components for manufacture technique and product evaluation trials in China.

The stainless steel prototype component was quoted while the design was still being finalized with a turnaround required in 13 working days.

Despite other existing tight production commitments and the three to five days delivery timescale for the stainless steel material, we initially quoted for delivery in the required timescale from receipt of order to the final design.

Once the order was placed with us there was the added frustration of a further seven-day delay due to a rework of the prototype component design. Once given the final go-ahead, we completed the work in less than ten working days.

Aluminum and Plastic Motor-sport Component Machining

On 3rd January Richconn received an urgent inquiry from a customer in the bespoke motorsports industry. The requirement was for 2 offs of 3 different parts, and the turnaround time was originally quoted at 20 working days.

As the project deadline loomed, the project restraints changed at the last minute, meaning the turnaround time needed to be changed to 7 days and there was little room for error as the customer had been let down by previous suppliers who delivered poor quality. We recognized the importance of both delivering on time and to the highest possible quality standard.

We reacted quickly to the urgency of the inquiry by turning the quote around on the same day. By discussing the exact requirements and application with the customer, our team quickly grasped the concept of the part and was able to help by offering aluminum and plastic machining expertise.

Because of the urgency of the inquiry, we were able to quote on the inquiry the same day. As a result, production was able to commence the following day, and the parts were delivered not only on time but within 5 days. The customer was delighted by our fast response and has continued to work with us since.

  • As machined (Ra 3.2μm / Ra 126μin)

This is our standard finish. Parts are machined and deburred, sharp edges are chamfered.

  • Bead Blasted

Parts are bead blasted with glass beads which results in a grainy texture.

  • Smooth machining (Ra 1.6μm / Ra 63μin)

Smooth machining is like an ‘As machined’ finish but with slightly less evident machine marks. Parts are machined at a lower feed, no hand polishing is applied.

  • Brushed + Electropolished (Ra 0.8μm / Ra 32μin)

Parts are brushed and electropolished. Ideal to reduce the micro-roughness of the part.

  • Black oxide

Applicable on steels, black oxide is a conversion coating used to improve corrosion resistance and minimize light reflection.

  • Chromate conversion coating

  • As machined + Anodized type III (Hardcoat)

Parts are machined and an anodizing type III coating is directly applied to the surface. Ideal to improve corrosion and wear resistance of components.

  • Bead blasted + Anodized type II (Matte)

Parts are bead blasted and anodized type II. Ideal for increasing the corrosion resistance of the part. Results in naturally matte colors. For glossy colors, please select the brushed anodizing option.

  • Brushed + Anodized type II (Glossy)

Parts are brushed and then anodized type II. Ideal for increasing the corrosion resistance of the part. Typically results in a glossy color.
